Every year, on the 5th of September, do your kids return from school and tell you what fun they had in the Teachers’ Day program? Of course, they do! They had no class, they did not get scolded, and neither did they have to be on their best behavior. And that is exactly what Teachers’ Day is all about. Or is it?

Ask your child why we celebrate Teachers’ Day. If they are clueless, then make sure that you fit into the shoes of a teacher and tell them all about the history of Teachers’ Day. If they already know, then you may add to their knowledge with the help of what I’ll be telling you now.

When is Teacher’s Day celebrated?

Teachers’ Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. As soon as you say this to your kid, they are most likely to come up with a series of questions.

You need to get well equipped to satisfy their queries. And to save your day, here are a few facts about one of the greatest teachers of all time.

Some Facts About Teachers’ Day

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan became the President of India in 1962. He was the second President of free India.

Besides being a great and knowledgeable scholar, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a devoted teacher. He taught at Madras Presidency College, the University of Mysore, the University of Calcutta, Harvard University, and the University of Oxford.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan shared a special bond with his students. What he taught them was much more valuable than what the books could teach. His openness of mind is reflected in his own words- “The True Teacher helps us to deepen our insight, not alter our view.

When his students wanted to celebrate his birthday as ‘Radhakrishnan Jayanti’, he humbly refused and said, “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if 5 September would be observed as Teachers’ Day.”

Thereafter, since 1962, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s birth anniversary has been marked as Teachers’ Day. He taught every one of us that having a day in your name is insignificant when you have the opportunity to celebrate what you love.

Do tell your child about the ‘Who’s and ‘Why’s of Teachers’ Day so that he/she gets to know all about the Great Teacher who taught the world to celebrate Teachers’ Day.
